Thoughts on Teens Pressured to Choose (Week 3)

I'm still not dead set on exactly what career to go with quite yet. I know that the class of 2015 and even the class of 2016 are being pressured to make a final decision on their future career, but in all honesty I feel like we shouldn't be. Juniors and seniors range from about 15 (almost 16)-18 (maybe even 19) and to me I feel like that's too young to decide what job/career you want to do for the rest of your life. At 17 years old, I'm pressured to pick my career that I will have for the rest of my life until retirement. So far I have been deciding between teaching and cosmetology as my future career, but my mind still isn't 100% made up yet. To me, we change when we're teen becoming adults and so will our career goals/choices. At 4, girls wanted to be mermaids or princesses and boys wanted to be pirates, cowboys, and G.I Joe. At 10-12, we wanted to be vets, doctors, firefighters, rock-stars, and so on. Jump forward some years later, we're 15-16 and already getting pressured to choose our career we'll have forever. Finally, we're 17-18, feeling like we're big failures for not knowing what we want to be forever. Some of us still want to be vets, doctors, police, etc. For those of us that still don't know yet, we stress, and we start to wonder if we'll ever become anything. The good thing is, we still have a bit more time to choose what we want to do. Sometimes, teens need time to come into their shell more and become more mature before they finally make up their mind. We shouldn't be pressured to choose so soon. We're only teens.

  1. I agree with you because they pressured us to much that at the end we didn't choose anything..

  2. Janay, I suppose high school is the time where individuals start figuring out who they are, I mean, by this time, there are many who feel they are great with people, or great with numbers or really like physical activity. So once we start figuring out who we are, then we need to use that information to determine what type of work we want to do, even if it is just a part-time job to get us through school or have our own spending money. I understand that there are many seniors right now that feel pressured about their future, however, I am hoping that you all really evaluate ideas and start with a goal to do something. On average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average person my age has had 11-15 jobs, so my point is just because you may want to do something today, that doesn't mean it will be forever. Most likely, you will have a few different jobs probably in different professions too! The bottom line is you have to begin somewhere!! I certainly wasn't planning on being a teacher if you would of asked me in high school. When I was in high school I wanted to work in business. I changed my mind when I was around 24 or 25 and went back to school to get my teaching credential. I am glad I did too because it has been the most fun out of all of my jobs!!

  3. I could not said it more honest than this. It is hard for some teenagers to chose a career for the rest our life. All depending on the student because some people know exactly what they want to do.

  4. I completely agree with you on that Janay! It is very difficult to decide on a career that you would be in for the rest of your life, especially at this age. Yes, there are people out there who already have their mind set on something, and that is great. But also, there is those who still have no idea and are undecided on a career, which is fine. It is a big step to know 100% what you want to know, and it should take time. For those who aren't sure yet, not knowing doesn't make you any less than those who do know what they want to do. All this future decision making is difficult and takes time.

  5. I agree with you Janay because although we learn what is necessary, schools don't give us the right amount of “Freedom” to chose our own future career. They expect us to “raise our hands’ to use the bathroom, the in a matter of months maybe weeks, they expect us to choose our future. From the time we are kids we obviously choose unrealistic careers but as we get older we learn the world is a competitive we learn the jobs we do want aren't going to be just handed to us. The point is very simple you can't expect us to pick what we want to do for the rest of our lives in a matter of months.
